The gas you get these days dissolves old gas lines. My guess is to take the tank off, wash it out good and replace pickup lines.

Even new gas line tubing comes with a warning that prolonged contact with gasoline may cause damage (dissolve) it. How messed up is that?

The pick-up lines in both my machines disintegrated. The ethanol in our fuel is the likely culprit. The pick-up point on my '03 is close to the bottom of the tank. It acted like it ran out of gas with a 1/4 tank. The point on my '02 is halfway up the tank, that one is the one that got me looking inside the tank, and sure enough..... Needless to say, I am now religious about using non-oxygenated fuel.

The fuel filter may be clogged. also trace lines to be sure are not kinked. shine a flashlight inside tank to look for restrictions at outlet.

I'm betting it's the pickup line, if you fill the tank full enough to cover the outlet to the fuel pump with fuel and pressurize the tank with air, you should get gas instead of air.

When I did my 650, the clamps used were crimped on and not reusable. A screw clamp won't fit through the hole in the tank. I found some fuel line at a chainsaw repair shop that gripped well enough that I could not pull it off once I put it on. If you don't have the crimp style clamps and plyers, that may be an option. If you use regular fuel line with no clamp, the pickup line and filter will fall off and you will be fishing in the tank to recover the filter. Trust me on that
