I am looking at building my own sled deck (need something to do this off season). I was just wondering if anyone else has built their own or seen a home made deck. I thought I saw a thread about one a while back but I can not seem to find it or any other.
I have a short box crew cab, not worried about building it just simply looking for advice on how others have done it or things I may be over looking. I am also interested in not doing any kind of bolt in construction or perminant mounts of any kind. It will be used for "light duty". No long tracks or super rough roads, and no climbing mtns or anything crazy going on here in Minnesota. Just building to hold 1-2 sleds every now and then when we dont have trailer space or if its just me going out.
Was in a thread on another forum... A guy was looking to build a deck, but ended up buying an older trailer with a deck in good condition. Tear off the axle and corresponding frame rails and you have an excellent deck for two sleds.
Something you need to keep in mind is that you should NOT build or use a deck on a truck under 3/4 ton and 1 ton would be an even smarter choice as a minimum. Two sleds, plus fuel, plus you, plus a buddy, plus riding gear, plus the weight of the deck... Think about how much that weighs. If you do that with a half ton truck, you're asking for problems with handling / braking.
And, if you get pulled over and they throw you on the scales, you WILL get ticketed.
The only easy homemade deck i'v see was two trifold ramps across the rails with a ten foot pallet for a ramp,,,and steel box frame for support all bolted together with u bolts and to the box.
