11100 mile (17863km) club - 94 xlt
That's allot of miles!
I'd like an opinion about what to do with the motor... Compression is 100, 100, 98. Should I throw some new rings in or pistons and rings? I'd like to keep the cost down as I want a new sled next year...
And, should I replace the head gasket with a new one?
Thanks for the opinions!!

With that many miles - a nice complete rebuild would be the way to go. Crank seals, pistons and rings. (as long as the crank / cylinder are in a good shape) You should have trouble-free running machine for the year - WL

Pistons and rings, at least. The potential for piston skirt failure is high with that many miles. Definitely replace the head gasket any time the head is removed. It's cheap insurance. Most gaskets don't work the second go around, even if they look fine.

Yep, probably due for rebuild. Definitely got your moneys worth out of that motor. Personally haven't seen many with that many miles.

As long as you have it open, I'd do a crank inspection and, assuming the journals and inside bearings are good, replace the seals, for sure, and outer bearings as needed.
Many times these engines can wear the journals that enclose the outer bearing race. You can make some remedies work, but too much play means replacement time. I intended to re-ring (and piston) my old '97 488 fan when it was around 10,000. I ended up putting it off until it was up to over 13,000. The cylinders were still within wear spec so I didn't oversize, and the pistons showed nothing to indicate stress so I kept them. I ran that engine to over 25,000 before it spit the rings. One piston was beginning to show skirt cracking - but hadn't dropped anything yet. The other piston was still intact in the skirts. Polaris really dropped good fans when they quit those old 340s, 440s, and 488s.
