I need to replace the stator on my 98 FIII 700 triple. Have any of you done this? How difficult is it to remove the flywheel? How critical is the stator position? (e.g. do I need a timing lite or can I eyeball it and get it close enough)?? Any other potential problems I should know about??

Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm in the same position as you right now. I'll be replacing the stator on the Mach ($210 for the stator with a 10% discount!) this week.

The only difficult is removing the flywheel. I had to remove the flywheel on a 600 triple motor and it was on there pretty good. I was using a puller I made so I do not know if that made it any more difficult but I wasn't about to pay $50+ for a puller. If it comes down to it I will remove everything to the point of removing the flywheel and just ask the dealer to pull it, then complete the repair myself.

The ski-doo service manual says:

"Normally ignition timing adjustment should not be required. it has been set at factory and it should remain correctly adjusted since every part is fixed and not adjustable. The only time the ignition timing might have to be changed would be when replacing the crankshaft, the magneto flywheel, the trigger coil or the MPEM."

If you want to see the pages that explain how to check timing email me and I'll email them to you.

You can change the stator without effecting the timing. It has a seperate trigger coil on the side for timing. You will need a puller for the flywheel. There is no timing to the stator.

Ya just put your puller on and if it don't come off put a little heat to the fly wheel , she'll pop . it's an easy job ... you'll see top left corner is your triger switch , don't touch that , then you will have to time it . The stator has 12 poles on it .... don't be like me ... I had the thing in my hand and I was looking for a plate like the old points are on .... hahaha Good luck .
