You know, "that guy"? I was him yesterday. There is a nice section of trail where you can open up your sled a little bit, and I did so. I got up to a little over 80 when I began to get close enough to my friend ahead that his snow spray was starting to impare my view. Just then I saw him cut a hard left turn and realized that I was going WAY too fast to make this turn that just appeared out of nowhere. I slammed the brakes hard and tried to scrub as much speed as possible. Not even 1/3 of the way into the turn I realized that I wasn't going to make it, so I straightened the sled back out so that it didn't barrel roll with me on it. I flew up over the birm created by all the riders, and became airborne. Beyond the birm was a 6' deep trench with a span of about 6' as well. I bailed off the sled to the right and landed in the snow. I was probably still doing 40 when I hit the snow. My sled came to rest on top of me, facing back where I came from. I imagine that the sled hit the side of the trench, and the rear end flipped over. It must have landed on its side and tipped on to me. Anyway, I got up, checked to make sure I wasn't dead or had body parts where they didn't belong, then shut off the sled. I tipped it back onto the skis and just then the rest of my riding crew was pulling up. We checked the sled over... absolutely NO visible damage whatsoever. We spent a few minutes getting the sled back onto the trail, and I continued to ride the rest of the day. The sled and I both made it through unscathed.

I just can't believe how lucky I was. if this turn didn't have so much open space beyond the trail, I would have been in serious trouble. I'm also damn lucky that I didn't mess myself or my sled up.

Anyway... everybody take it easy. I'm a safe rider that made 1 lapse in judgement that almost got me killed. Always stay within that comfortable range when you ride.

Glad to hear you're OK. It's amazing how steep the learning curve is when you scare the SH*^ out of yourself, isn't it?

Sure is. My sled wasn't airborne again for at least 10 minutes after that happened.

Jim85IROC, Good to hear that:

1. You're OK
2. Your sled is ok
3. Something was learned

I think we have all been there and done that. Its good to be able to sit back and actually learn from it, compared to those who get back on the sled and just keep riding "that" way.

Keep the shiny side up
