Wire brush, and bar-b-que paint works well, or, if you're made of money (as Red Green would say - LOL), you could even get proper header paint from an automotive supply house.

roughly sand the pipe and can, then apply 3 or 4 coats of tremclad BBQ paint. Works great.

As DOONUT said, "3 - 4 Coats Of Paint".

I wire wheeled mine this summer, went through 3 cans of high temp woodstove paint @$10- a can. Worked out to 2 coats on each pipe & the can. They looked beautiful. After 800 miles, they are starting to go bad. No rust yet, but you can see the signs.

Next summer I'll put on atleast 4 coats!!

Live & learn, live & learn.....

i do mine every season with the wire brush and high heat paint. sled pipes are a pain the way they need so much maintenance in that area, i even squirt my pipe after evey ride with wd-40.{sled pipe for you perverts} lol

I always take the wire wheel to mine and get them good and cleaned up. Then I spray some cleaner on that is non oil based to get them ready to paint. I just use the high temp paint I got at the implement dealership for tractor exhaust. Its worked good for me so far!

I blast mine, stick it in the gas grill and get it hot and paint. The paint bakes on good and lasts many seasons.

The grill paint works well alone. But, if you are into overkill, you could spray it with some "extend" rust oxidizer. Then hit her with the grill black.
