Today i was cleaning my carbs again before trying anything else ,(1995 STX LT) because sled wasn't working well at slow speeds...
What i found was one of the jet needles was about 1/4" shorter than the other, upon closer looking... it is broke off.
OK , I had my 3 old carbs off of my 96 FIII 600. so I took 2 needles out of these and put them in the other ones,BUT they are not the same..
What type of problems am I going to have?
95 STX Jet Needle# 6DNH44
96 FIII Jet Needle# J8 6DEY2

The reason I tried this is because we dont have a dealer here and I had to order the needle and it will be a week or more.
Thanks Rodney
ps Since i put in the other needles I did start my motor and had it running for a few minutes , and all seemed well... ???

Take the 2 needles and inspect them closely. Compare the length, and the tapers at all points. Needles are very important!!!!!! If the needles are fatter or longer, and you absolutely have to ride, run them as rich as possible. I would not ride it till the proper needles were in it.

OK I shouldn't run it like this, BUT could I put 2 of the FIII carbs on the STX?
STX VM 38
FIII VM 36
Both have the same main jets 320,330. ???
ps. the needles that I put in are about 3/16" longer than the originals.

I would think that with the FIII carbs being a smaller carb, you are going to get less air into the motor. The jetting maybe the same, but I dont think that it would work. The longer needle is going to let less fuel into the air mixture. It wont let the fuel up as quickly. Just my thoughts. I would wait until the other needles to come in or you maybe rebuilding a motor from running it to lean!!!!

A longer needle is a leaner needle. IMHO I would not risk blowing a piston, cylinder, etc... over a $15 needle. Order one and you are all set.
