I own a 02 MXZ 600 with 2000 miles. How often should I be changing the chain case oil? When I checked it, it had many metal fragments on the magnet. Should it be done by the dealer or is it easy to do? Is there a drain hole on the bottom? Thanks.

i change the chaincase oil in the spring when i summerize our sleds. the end of the dipstick is a magnet that why there are fillings on it. on our 02 800 there is a plug on the bottom of the case, not sure of the 600. even if you have to take the cover of the case off its a pretty easy job. i have been using mobil 1 syn. gear oil for years. where in maine are you?

I'd change the oil at least every season or more frequent. Relativly cheap. You should have a drain plug which my machine doesn't. I just finished replacing a few of my gears. Not too bad a job now that I have done it. I'll be changing mine at end of season and half way through.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like I should have changed it already. I live in the Portland area, but do most of my riding in Jackman. Cross over into Canda most trips which is really great riding.

I also have an 02 MXZ 600. THe drain plug is underneath the sled. Use an allen wrench. Very easy to to drain. Get a narrow funnel to get the new oil into the case. I was told to use the synthetic bomber chain oil. I am going to change every Fall. Hope this helps.

Use the Klotz or Amsoil synthetic. It's cheaper than the 'doo oil. I use the Amsoil oil as its pour point is lower than the Klotz.

comperk415 said he was going to change his in the fall. You would be wiser to change it after the season is over to get rid of any grunge that might have accumulated over the season. Don't let it sit there all summer.

Once at the beginning of the season should be enough. Unless you put on a ton of miles. Use Ski-doo synthetic oil only. I check the dipstick every so often and wipe off the fragments to keep it clean. I've been doing it this way on my mxz for 6 years and the bearings and chain look fine every year.

i change my crankcase oil when it doesn't look like good oil anymore, every three years. but for my sons sled i change his all the time because he is a drift basher his oil goes white and i think that is how the water gets in there. there is no drain hole you have to take the entire cover off and make sure the "O" ring goes back where it belongs.

Comperk 415 is right, and has the easiest way of doing it, but I would do it in the spring, to get all the crude and moisture out of it., so it's not sitting there all summer corroding, just my .02
