Are the green 1997 zr580 batteryless efi????? and are these sleds any good ....reliable? any thing to look for when buying a used one?
I see them going for around $3500 canadian for the 1997 green zr580's.

97 was the first year for the battery less efi overall its a good sled, good handling, decent power the only down side is not the greatest fuel mileage but they do fly. All 97s are green there are 96 limited editions that have a green hood i have one very sharp. What to look for is clutch condition, and the intake boots for cracks very common with 580s mine had them cracked. They're fun sleds i'm selling my 96 zr580 efi le for $1800 obo. :thumbsup:

I've had my 96 zr since new and had no major problems , I love it. The intake boots are something to look at as well as frt drive shaft bearings should have been replaced already in a 97. The water pump gives trouble with leaking on the manual seal and these engines don't like to be overheated ,cyl head temps should never go above 180 deg so watch coolant levels . Over all I like the handling and feel alot more than my brother in laws zl500 . I believe the 97 still used the 6 post primary and you should consider an upgrade to the 9 post.

I sure do like mine!!
97 was the first full production... but you could get a 96.5 that was green as well.
Go with the 97... bit different design of seat, which I think is better.
I have seen them in the autotrader between 2800 - 3800.00

Mine&#39;s always for sale, love the sled, but if someone wants it bad enough... take it! I will find another! lol

Well... I guess I am on the good side of that 50/50 - 5200 miles!
The only thing I have done to mine, rebuild the clutches, changed a coolant line that rubbed and put a small hole in... that&#39;s it! I run good oil, I treat it as a 580... not a 900! It&#39;s not a lake racer... it&#39;s a great trail sled! It corners great, it pulls out of the turns nice, has good power from the bottom to mid range. The only downside I find is from 75mph up! 30 and up, it rocks back and gets light on the skis... pulls very nice! (mind you I do have a good clutch kit!)
Some guys are saying their&#39;s are hard on gas, mine gets just as good milage as a ZL500 EFI that rides with me! It&#39;s all in the way you ride it. We do ride fast, but not to the bar all day long, racing on the lake, yah, it will blow pistons. From what I have seen in the 3 ZR580&#39;s that I have had... drag racing is not good for a 580! As I have bought my share of pistons and jugs. But so far so good with this one! I just check it all over, did a compression check, all good! I have to do some painting on the skid, charge the shocks, clean the clutches and she will be already for next winter! Oh yah, studs for next year.

I have an 01 800 but I still think that the 97 580 is he nicest looking sled ever built.I think that they handle better too. :thumbsup:

I have to agree they are asweet looking sled....I see all the mixed review on here about the 580, but I think If i find one that has been well maintained I dont think it should give me any more problems then any other sled???? Is the batteryless efi alot better then the battery efi????? efi compared to carb????? just want easy starting and smoth running and good throttle responce!
