Bombardier Wins Prestigious If Design Award For The Rotax Kart RM1
Gunskirchen, Austria, June 02, 2003
Bombardier Recreational Products is pleased to announce that the Bombardier Rotax® Kart RM1™ has been honored with the 2003 iF Silver Design Award in the transportation category. The iF Design Award is one of the best-known and most prestigious design contests in the world.
"Extraordinary quality and design distinguish our Rotax Kart RM1. Only the very best entries to this contest receive an award for exemplary design quality - in face of some very stiff competition," said Harald Plöckinger, Managing Director of Bombardier-Rotax. "This prize is the reward for our passionate dedication for our products, for the sport and for our customers," Mr. Plöckinger stated proudly.
The revolutionary Bombardier Rotax Kart RM1 offers an innovative, well thought-out package for the race track. Unlike other current karts this innovative chainless 2-speed direct drive train (patent pending) does not require any service, like lubrication or chain adjustment thus providing safer and cleaner operation. The rear axle is integrated in the 125 MAX DD2 crankcase, thus requiring a special chassis. The development of the Rotax Kart focussed on safety and design as well as on performance and handling.
The Rotax Kart RM1 scores with numerous innovations and extras:
Chainless Direct Drive 125 MAX DD2 engine
Innovative Rear Fender System (RFS) with Rear Tire Protection System (RTPS) (patent pending)
Crash-tested, homologated Front Fender System (FFS)
2-speed gearbox
Shifting at the steering wheel
Rotax Electronic Reverse (RER)
First Kart specific brake system with 4 disks (Magura**)
Multi-function display
Scratch-proof fairings
Attractive design.
Can this be on Doos by 05???
Might they make it a 1 speed for use in 2005 sleds???
Or can having a 2speed help in having the Holeshot then the top end speed???
Yes I know it is in the karts but it would be interesting to see it trikle down to their sleds
This might be the 1st modern TRUE direct drive in a sled unlike the basic Polaris system used from 80-mid 90s
What are your thoughts on this developpement ??

I think it's very cool FB. I wonder if there is plans for it to a PROTO on a sled or if the R&D budget at Ski-Doo has been affected. I certainly hope not.
A couple of questions. Would this system do away with the chaincase and the belt driven CVT or just the chaincase? With this system I take it that more power would get to the ground as it isn't being robbed through drivetrain ineffeciencies.

Interesting....I talked to a buddy (last week) that I used to work with when I was at ski-doo r&d in spring of 2001 in valcourt. We where talking about the new yami 450 quad and came on ski-doo talking...but since Im not working there no more he refused to tell me whats coming. But he just told me that to be prepared cause very interesting stuff are on the way. Maybe this system is included in what he told me. I also remember when I was there, they where testing a rev prototype that was equipped with a "blower like" strap timing belt about 2-1/2" wide intead of a common chaincase setup. It could be this also. Only time will tell... ??? But the system you describe in the cart seem to be like an harley davidson setup with a gearbox separate from the engine?? Will do a search on this kart to see picture of it. a kind of tranfer case??

THey simply include the drive shaft thru the gear box. Will cost High $$$ to change a bent axle....and maybe casing too when it happened. The concept has no really applicable use in snowmobile.

A good inovation on kart for sure since the cart is a little shorter since there is no chain and sprokets on the way. weight saving too. The other will need to follow on this one for sure. Depend on the patent pending on it.

I believe direct drive does away with the CVT system Jeff.
