i am looking at a 91 Indy RXL SKS 650 for $600/BO. The problem is that the EFI is shot. How hard would it be to replace and fix that? The owner said i could throw carbs on it for pretty cheap, is this true? i dont know how much carbs are going for...Are these pretty good sleds? I dont know about getting it because there is no way to check the engine because it doesnt run...would it be worth the risk, and if so how much should i offer him? ....also, how much could i sell it for if i wanted to? any info would be appreciated, thanks alot.

There is a post similar to this in march or april I beleive. If it were me I would take this sled only if it were given to me throw in delivered. Then look for the motor with carbs and stator and do a complete change.

These were good solid sleds in their day. The FI system is expensive to work on now, but there may not be much wrong with it. I would gamble on the motor. It's probably OK, but obviously no gaurantees. If the sled appears to be clean and in good condition otherwise, if you are good with your hands, and figuring stuff like this out, you might try offering maybe half of what he's asking for it, but no more than you are willing to lose if you can't get it running. The sleds major components will easily part out for more than what you have into it.

Like it was said, You could easily part it out and get your money back. You could get the carbs off of Ebay, or look around at snowmobile salvage yards. I have seen carbs on Ebay go really cheap. I was talking with my Polaris dealer about a year ago about Polaris's EFI, he said "the EFI units have a lifetime gurantee!" I dont know if he knows what he is talking about, but thats what he had told me. Polaris stole the info from someone at one point. I dont know if that had anything to do with it. Thats what we were talking about when he brought it up. Maybe something to check into. Like I said, thats what he told me. Dont know how true it is. Carbs can be put on it. It has been done. I would look for carbs a carb set up from a 650 carb and go with the jetting from there, be conservitive till you check the jetting.

My buddy has a 91 and a 92 RXL. They both run like tops. How does this guy know the EFI is shot? The Injectors are just Bosch automotive injectors. The system has an electric fuel pump, and a few relays in there as well. They run fantastic, it may be worthwhile to invest a little time into figuring it out before you bail on the EFI. Also, the battery MUST be in a good state of charge and in good repair or else they won't run worth a damn.
$600 is an OK deal. Offer him $400, see if he bites. You'd get that for the motor if you had to part it.

IMO look for a running sled, even if you paid 1000 you would be farther ahead. SWRules
