Hey everyone... I just bought a 04 80 XC SP and had questions about traction. I used to ride a 97 440 XCR and had no studs, by choice. I like to be able to "kick" the rear out in corners if I want to. My wifes 96 XLT SP has studs... sure it hooks up better but not as fun in the twistys. I really don't know what to expect with the 800. Not only have I never ridden an EDGE chassis but never a 800 either.
Should I just plan to stud the sled??
Given the style of riding I like to do will I regret it or will the traction be worth while given the HP?
Lastly, is there a good website that describes EDGE rear suspension tweaking?
Thanks to everyone for your help!!

There is no question in my mind, you should plan on studding. There are nearly as many opinions here as there are riders regarding studding. The 800 has huge power going to the ground off the line. Unless you are racing it, I wouldn't even try to hold the line with traction there. I have an '02 800, am running 192 with 144 of those in the center(still spins like crazy off the line). Will be reducing this number for the exact reason you mention....too much traction in the corners.
When I redo it, it will be set up with 144 total, and as many as possible as close to the rails as possible. Lots of guys using single and dual angle backers also.

I myself would much rather have a 1.25 lug track, and NO studs.
It depends when you want traction......If you ride on ice and low snow conditions, then yes do get studs, but if you have a snow base then the studs are not going to help you at all.
Use your personal judgement!

i ran a 1 1/4" camo finger track last year on my xc 800, no studs. worked fine. you just have feather it out of the corners. ps ive already studded it for this year.
