I just bought my first sled, a 96 Ultra 680 3954miles on it for $1500 thinkin i got a good deal only damage is a dent where you put your feet on the outside edge, hard to explain. Thing is I just talked to a guy who was a seasoned rider and he told me to make sure it didn't hurt the cooling system, so now my question is where is the cooling system located on this sled? How do I know whether it hurt it or not, is there a diagram I can look at to show me where the cooling system is located and how it runs through the tunel? Hopefully this is nothing more than cosmetic but I would like to know becuase i have a gaurentee on the sled for a while so if this is a problem i can just get my $$$ back. Other than this I am quite excited and can't wait for winter bring on the snow!!! Just for a little more the guy told me he has a set of SPI i think tripple pipes and guages he would throw in for an extra $300, which i am told rocket ships this sled near 150 horse!!!!
Thanx
Wayne

The cooling system is in heat exchangers underneath the floorboards if it si like my XLT. They are greyish aluminum things with a bunch of grooves in them. As long as there is no holes punched in them or a kink in it you should be fine. I hope, I would like someone else to help me out on this one to tell me i am right though!

Congrats on the purchase.
you will have the time of your life

That should be quite the ride for a first sled. Skip the 500's, 600's and go straight for a beast. Should be a total blast.

Hint - don't take riding lessons from sled dogg, he will show you all the tricks like flying over the hood and one hundred ways to survive mishaps on the trail etc.

Just kidding, I saw you were lurking in the post and I suspected you were about to post and welcome the Ultra brother on board. LOL.

Hey Sled Dogg, how's the XLT working out, any bites yet?

That looked as clean as the as the Ultra. How did you latch on to it?

Just lay down on your back and look underneath. You will see the heat exchanger. Right under where your foot would be. There is one on each side plus one right in front of the track under neath. That one you would have to flip the machine on it's side to see.

Any Polaris manual would have a diagram.

Edit: The pipes may make it faster and sound better but will also make it more fussy. May have to change the jets as well. You would have to watch your RPM.

I have a nice used set of triple pipes that will fit your sled. How about $150/obo?

chances are even if the heat exchanger is bent up it is still good, they can look pretty bad and not leak.so unless that dent in the foot rest is really bad your cooling system should be fine.

Triple pipes might be faster!!!!!, are you kidding, Triples on an Ultra is one of the most significant gains ever on a stock sled . Most aftermarket companies advertise 38-42 hp gain with pipes alone just make sure you follow the pipe manufacturers jetting specs. Congrats!!!!

the coolers on a 96 ultra are located under the seat right beneath the trunk, there is allso one in the front of the bulkhead.they do not have the running board ones like the XLT.
the triple pipes you mentioned(slp?...I heard this weekend that PSI are the best for that motor)that is definatly the way to go.
make sure that the sled was run at your elevation, when the ultra first came out(96) they came with an high altitude head,my brother has one and it just flat out rips here(it has had some mods)

As far as the pipes go if this is your first sled and you're not comfortable with clutching and jetting IMO it would be a mistake.

Theres a good chance you'll end up slower than stock if you're lucky, burning it down if you're not.

Yes, if done right they will really wake it up.
