The Exciter I recently purchased as about 8000 miles on it, I got it for $700 with a 2 place trailer w/sno sheild, its in great shape, very well cared for, this guy was really into Exciters. According to the old owner it has a stealth pipe on it (much bigger than stock), piston is 4 times over sized, does that meen 100 MM over?

crank bearing were replaced at ~ 5000 miles. 1 cylinder has 140 lbs the other 120lbs, does it need rings?

At idle motor sounds a little noisier than my old Bombi 700 tripple,or yamaha 540 fan, not like a cement mixer just a little ticking noise, is this normal of the 570 L/C?

Are these motors suseptable to overheating?

It has a Comet clutch on the primary and Arctic secondary, is there anything I need watch out for on either?

Thanks for your help

Don

Anyone have any feedback on the clicking noise from the motor, are they naturally a little noisey?

I can't help you with that (someone will eventually, lol), but I would probably get the rings or whole top end done. I know someone who has one, I don't think it overheated, and it was fast as hell. Sorry that's all I can tell yea...

The Exciter is a fun sled. I have an '87 myself. I don't remember any strange clicking noises at idle but it's been a while since I've used it.

Not sure what 4 times over would be but I would guess 4 x 10 thousanths. Probably 40 thousanths oversize (0.040")

I figured there would be some die hard Exciter fans here that would know everything about theses sleds inside and out. I have heard they are pretty fast sleds, they guy who owned this before me put a widening kit on it and a 94 V-Max skid, I don't know sh#$ about these.

The clutch seems to engage at kind of a low RPM too, like 3000 rpm

I had a 1991 Exciter, basically the same motor but the cylinders are NIKASIL on the newer ones. The compresion ratio doesn't sound good, usually should be within 5% of each other. Maybe someone bored only one cylinder? As for the noises could be the primary clutch weights rattling around? If it happens after a good hard run, could be detination happening but it kind of sounds like someone patched a rough engine back together. I would pull it apart for the cost a a gasket kit or at least pull the exhuast manifold off and have a look up the port with a light and mirror to see if you have severe piston damage or cylinder damage. Good old sled though, I like the look of them better than the later ones. Lots of used parts arround also.

The 1987 had lots of updates sent out by Yamaha. Yours came with Butterfly carbs stock, yamaha recalled them and updated to round powerjet carbs. Then updated them to Non-powerjet, then they found the real problem (with the help of PSI inc) with the carb needle tapper. They would burn a piston if you would go from WOT to closed to WOT..
It would lean out and it's all done, even with way over rich jetting.
So make sure you have 1990 exciter needles.
They also added weight to the flywheel if you spin any more RPM then stock (bad vibs).
Your sled has a decompression switch on the dash, make sure it's not stuck half open or your valve could be leaking in the Cyl. They use to make plugs for the valves in the cly.

they did more stuff to them... I just cant remember all of it right now..

Hello,

I googled exciter and stumbled uppon this site. I saw this post and thought I would respond.

I have an '88 Exciter Deluxe. I have some maintence to do to it before I slap the for sale sign on it and saw ToyDoc's post about the carb's. I have to pull mine apart to clean them before I can sell it and was wondering if you knew anything about these needles? I believe this burn down effect has happened to my sled twice about a year apart for each and just over $1000 to fix the melt down form the lean condition. I't nice that the Yamaha dealer did nothing but replace the damaged components. It sure would have been nice to have them mention something after the first meltdown. It is very important not to run it out of gas and stay away from WOT-closed-WOT moves without throttling down/up gradually. Meltdowns are a real pain since parts and labor is more than you paid for the sled. I guess my cylinders are .030 over or more.

Anyhow after I remove the gummed up idle circuit it should run like it did last time I rode it back in '96. (It was stolen in '97 and we got it back in '99 it was hard to come back to snowmobiling after that.)

About your '87. The front end issues are going to be the biggest issue you will have. The TSS was a terrible design as far as stearing response goes. It is great if your heim joints are tight but that does not last too long. Problem is there is no leverage between the stearing rods and the collar on the TSS shaft. The ski's act as levers and bend the hell out of the joints. We just rebuilt our's again. The rear suspension is ok. Not anything like the Proaction or M10. I took a look at the Exciter the other day and compaired it to the Proaction Plus in my VMax and they are so different it is hard to even picture how they went form one to the other.

I would not worry too much about the compression it could be that there is a bit more oil on the liner of the cylinder with the 140 reading. Which cylinder was the higher reading? Clutch side or flywheel side?

The sled is great on smooth trails. I had her on the other side of 90 for 15 minutes+ on the trail from Brimley to the Soo. The sled the last time I was in the UP was great except on the rough near town trails. The 569 is a stout motor for it's time. I think for $700 with a trailer you got a great deal.

Happy sleding,

Chris
