I talked to the dealer about my 96 EXT 580 efi deluxe... his thought was that it needs a new stator. He told my dad it would probably run about $500.

First of all, teach me about the stator. Also: would it be easy to replace, or would it be best to let the dealer handle it?

I think its time for an '04!

I dont know if this is an acceptable description but you should get the idea. The stator is a round unit that sits under the flywheel. when the flywheel spins it causes magnets on the stator to energize into electrical pulses which are converted into usable energy (watts, ac etc) when the stator starts to break down it limits the amount of energy it outputs especially when it heats up. The stator must produce a minimum amount of energy in order to operate your coils which fire your plugs among other things (headlight, handwarmers). You can usually dig up a good used stator at a salvage yard for round 1/2 the price of new and are relatively simple to change..Steve

They can be rebuilt and other than a flywheel puller come off without much fuss.
Try Stator Corp. 508-478-0976 or Electric Tech 508-478-0692. I'm sure there are others.

Good description Rottie!

This is pretty accurate.

Depending how mechanical you are you can do it on your own. Being the fact that the sled is 8 years old, I would definately do this on my own. I can't remember if you would have to lift the motor or not to get the stator out. I think you would. You also need a flywheel puller which you can get cheap. It's not hard to do, just a little time consuming. Would go faster with 2 people. You need to pull the recoil off, take the flywheel off and then you will see the stator. You can test this before pulling it with a ohm meter.
