Hello all,
I'm bored of waiting to ride my new-to-me SRX, (actually I had it out a few days ago - wish I hadn't!!). I've read lots of 'professional' reviews, how about some honest opinions from the guys who own em??
Hopefully I'll be adding my review to this list soon! :christmas:

My friend was quite impressed by the 20XX (since I've been corrected on another thread) sled he bought towards the end of last season, though he did put the ripsaw track on it this fall. Other than that he is very happy. He rode a 96 Polaris Triple (600), was going to buy another, then he went to the Polaris/Yamaha Dealer and came home with the Yamaha.
Cory-This is not bashing-just what happened.......

I'll try to keep it short and sweet. The sled is extremely fast. It doesn't have the raw power feel, but rather a linear accerleration feel. Compared to a big twin Arctic Cat which goes "Braaaappp" when the throttle is pulled and your arms come out of their sockets, the SRX just starts going zzzzzzzzzoooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMM!!!!!!
Keep it stock as it's fast enough. Hyfax wear can be a problem, but not if you follow the recommendation for hyfax wear put out in the 2002 Yamaha Technical Update Manual. I have no complaints about the skid. It's all about set up and 8 inches of travel in the rear is plenty for me and the kind of riding I do. On cold, cold rides, ice seemed to accumulate in the tunnel and let loose every now and then. Once it locked up my track. Watch for that. Handling is suburb. I had a bit of ski lift in the fast corners, but I have my front springs set on the soft side. Gas mileage is one of the best you'll find out there compared to anyone. Expect to average 15 mpg. Buy a mid-height windshield for the colder days. Keep both of them with you to interchange depending on the temps. Deep snow capability is not that great. Be sure to be standing when going off trail and get ready to jump off and run beside if you're bogging down. I only notice the weight when getting stuck. I still run the stock skis and don't mind them, but I did add Bergstrom ski savers this year to aid in darting; since I have the limiters pulled up a bit, I have more weight on the front. I will also shim the saddle to put more pressure on the back of the ski; kinda looking for a 60/40 split on carbide wear.
I will not trade this sled in. This sled is a blast, I love the 3x3 motor, the looks, speed, handling, economy, reliability, cool factor, color, etc..........
You'll enjoy it, believe me.

Thanks for the info!
From the few times I've ridden my buddies, I do recall that 'zoom' experience you refer to. I took that machine down a plowed radar run and WOW!! It just kept pulling & pulling..
As for hyfax wear - what 's the recommendation?? Again, the guy I ride with says that he changes sliders twice a season, which seems a little excessive, but no big deal really. Better than changing pistons.
Also seem to remember reading about a track getting locked up by ice reading this forum last season. This could very well have been you! I guess there's not much you could do to prevent this, just know that it could happen.
I'm looking forward to getting it out on the trails soon. I have a feeling (despite what skeptics have been telling me.....) that I'm going to like it. I'm already addicted to the sound of that motor...
Jon - not even considering an RX-1??

For hyfax wear reduction, go with 2.5mm lower control rod spacers (stock is 5mm).
Shorten the limiter straps by increasing the adjuster bolt thread length somewhere between 37mm to 42mm. After shortening the strap length, reduce the center shock spring preload to "0".
You must change the lower control rod spacers inorder for this to work properly. Although I change my hyfax every year regardless of wear, mine had a bit over 1700 miles on with this set up. I must admit I do think of them often and run over on the side of the trail every so often to pack good snow in the skid. But, they still had life left in them even after 1700 miles.
The shortened limiter straps will put more weight on the front end and steering will be a bit heavier. This year I loosened them a tad and put them to around 37mm of thread length. I had a little darting with this set up (heavier front end), so I also opted to adjust toe-out by 5mm and I added the Bergstrom ski savers.
By the way, I'm curious why you wished you hadn't taken your sled out????

It seems like every year after my first ride I ask myself - why didn't I wait until the trails are open before I go out for a ride?? Why am I so impatient?? Since the trails aren't open, we usually ride secondary trails (non-OFSC), roads, ditches, private property, people's lawns (OK, maybe not that last one). You get the picture. And since there's only 6" of snow coverage, unpacked snow coverage at that, you're really essentially riding on bare ground, as studs and carbides dig right to the bottom. And to make it an even more enjoyable experience, you get to ride through the obstacle course of mudholes, stumps, and downed trees.
So my 'new' machine came home on Saturday covered in dirt & pine needles. Not that there wasn't a lot of snow - there certainly was in the ditch that I got stuck in!! (your tip about jumping off would have really come in handy here). Ditch-banging and carving new trails can be nerve-racking enough without doing it on a machine that's totally foreign to you. Strangely though, I was smiling ear to ear the whole time!
Think I'll be patient next year?? Not a chance.

I hate when my sled's dirty
But, at least you got to ride. My first chance won't be until December 28th. That is unless we get walloped near St. Louis. (Deep Breath and hold :undercover: ............................)

Do you have ESP or something?? How do you know the exact date of your first ride? If it helps, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Even though we usually get snow in late-November to early-December here, the trails rarely ever open before Christmas. And as per my previous post, the trails aren't usually worth riding before that anyways.
Just curious - you said you wouldn't trade the SRX in, you wouldn't even consider an RX-1? You like the smell of 2-stroke cologne that much?

December 27th is when I'll arrive in Hornepayne. December 28th is when I'll be rested enough after driving 1100 miles to hit the trails. Yes, they will have snow. I'm optimistic and my wife's bad shoulder can feel low pressure systems weeks in advance.
I really like my sled. I've never been one with the need to constantly update each/or every other year with newer technology; when what I have makes me perfectly happy. The newer stuff is nice, don't get me wrong, but I'm satisfied with what I ride. (Here I'm referring to an '02 as old...........ha ha).
If anything, I'll keep the SRX and trade in the wife's sled for a Warrior. That way we'll have both in the family.

Hornepayne Ontario??? (How many Hornepayne's can there possibly be?) Well, you definitely won't have to pray for snow up there, they probably have enough to open the trails already!
I've ridden the 'snow highways' of the north a couple times (always the Timmins - Cochrane area), there's nothing like it. I'm hoping to sneak out of the office for a few days this year to take a trip north again. I'm sure that the 'new' SRX will love those trails.
Most of the guys I ride with are the 'latest & greatest' type, I personally would have kept my old machine another year if it didn't have 15000km's on it!
