I have a buddy that has a 97 (I think) 600 triple Formula III. Been a great sled, but this thing goes through head lights like nobody's business. He will ride it for a while, (could be 10 minutes, could be an hour) and POOF, gone. Put a new bulb in, and it may or may not last. The voltage at the bulb checked at 12.3 roughly, a little higher at idle, and that was on a stand buzzing throughout the RPM range. I have not checked it when it actually happens. The other weird problem is he keeps fouling the middle spark plug. not everytime he rides, but fairly regular. I have not looked into that one, just curious if there is something with this sled that may cause this. Thanks in advance.

check to make sure the bulb is secure..if its bouncing around then it will break.

After the first bulb they made sure it was tight, but thanks for the suggestion. I also saw a post somewhere about this happening with some aftermarket bulbs. Any truth to this? It is just strange. \One other point to add. It will burn either high or low, whichever one is being used, then the other when you switch to it????? I am going to check and see which bulbs he is using when I go over tommorrow night.

2 possibilities-

1> Most people know this, but you can't touch the glass of a halogen bulb when installing it. That's why they usually come with a cardboard sleeve over the glass, so that you don't touch the glass. Apparently the oil from your skin can cause the glass to break when it gets hot.

2> Could be a faulty voltage regulator - maybe sending the light (and all other electricals) voltage spikes. You probably wouldn't pick this up on a multimeter. Do you notice that the headlight or instrument lights tend to flicker?

Sound like you have a votage regulator problem or wiring to the reg.

Any chance its a 98? The 98's were plauged with electrical problems, theres a 20+ page bulletin just on elect troubles. They range from shorting hadwarmer circuitry to the main harness rubbing on the chassis under the motor which cause shorts to ground, both permanent and intermittent..

I had a 98 F-III 600 with the same problem only it took out the headlight, taillight, electric gas gauge, temp gauge, and dash lights. Turned out to be a faulty voltage regulator.

Same here.. Had a 1998 Touring SLE.. Went through about 3 bulbs in one week.. Finally out riding at night.. Bulb went really bright and blew.. Switced to high beam same thing.. Swapped the voltage regulator and everything worked fine.. From what I remember it was a real pain getting to the voltage regulator, I hope you have small hands and alot of swivel adapters for your ratchet set!

Thanks for all of the replies. I will check all of those things tonight when I go over to look at it. My first thought also was voltage regulator, but the dealer I talked to said it would blow the taillight and dash lights first. I will tell him to get a new bulb or two and a voltage regulator and go from there. Thanks again for all of the replies. If we can get the parts on tonight we are supposed to ride tommorrow, so I should know then.

I have had some sleds do the exact same thing and it did not show up on a multi meter but it was the voltage regulator.

Good luck
