I use a Nextel and they don't work in the UP of Mi. I was thinking of trying to find a pay as you go cell phone for my trips to the UP. Anybody know of a company that has a cell phone that works in the UP without a contract?
Thanks
Mark

I know Verizon doesn't have very good coverage on the western side of the UP. I talked to some others that said the cell coverage is very limited in the UP. As far a pay as you go I have no experience on that.

We use Telus Mobility up here, and the reception is very good. I have been almost 10 miles out into Georgian Bay and called my wife. There customer service has been excellent as well.

I ran sprint around Newberry last year and had a few dead spots, but was able to find roaming most of the time,,,, actually, I think I was in roam starting about Bay City,,,,
This year I am gonna try verizon,,,, I dont care about roam, just want to have the service,,,,

I use nextel, go out pretty much north of the bridge. Had verizon a long time ago and it didn't work very well either.

No experience in riding the UP, but I have similar problems in parts of VT and NH where I ride. My solution is to bring an external antenna for my cell phone, just like what you'd use on your car. Yeah, it's a little bulky but my signal strength goes from "No Service" to 4 or 5 bars almost anywhere that I've used it. You're probably looking at $30 or $40 for the antenna, cable and connector.........an expense well worth it if you're having an emergency.
Can't guarantee that it'll work in the UP, as I have no idea what the tower layout is like there but I'll tell you it's been a life saver here! BTW......don't waste your money on those little "signal boosters" that you stick under your battery....total gimmick.
Ride Safe!

From what I have been told, Century Cellunet owns all the cell towers in the UP, and anyone that roams off of their service will work Ok at best, just not that many towers.
I used to have verizon, and it worked as good as anything else up there.
