OK, I fired up my sled the other day for the first time, just to make sure it was ready.

I never noticed before, but my secondary seemed to be running not quite true (had a small wobble). That acutally sounds worse than it is, but if you put a dial gauge on it, I would guess about 1/4" of runout. It still seemed smooth, just not completely true.

So, is that a problem, normal, not normal? It may have always done that, but I never noticed it before. I was running it with the clutch cover off and noticed a little side to side movement. From what I can tell, the jack shaft is running true, so I believe its the actual secondary.

Just looking for opinions.

thanks,

FishHog

FishHog,

Sorry I can't comment on all brands,

If your secondary is a Bombardier formula secondary, there shouldn't be more than .060 lateral run out. You say the jackshaft runs true. Does the fixed half pulley wobble or the sliding half?. The fixed half, even if it's dead straight will have some play due to it's fit on the jackshaft. The sliding half is governed by the belt profile, the stop adjustment screws and the bushing condition. A good starting point is to remove the belt and back out the stop screws in the fixed pulley until the sheeve are closed (screws will be finger tight). Remove secondary retaining bolt then pull the key out so you can turn secondary on the shaft. Apply a small amount of good quality anti-seize lub onto jackshaft. Set up your dial indicator as you did prior and do a lateral runout on each sheeve face where the belt runs at the top (the outside of the pulleys rarely run straight). If there is less than above mentioned runout on the fixed half Great!. If the sliding half runs straight then your three (sometimes 2) stop screw were miss adjusted. If the sliding half still wobbles you will need to disassemble it and inspect bushings and center shim (washer) for wear. A common mistake mechanics make with Bombi secondarys is to clean them too well using harsh chemicals. The best thing is hot soapy water which will draw out contaminants from aluminum parts and won't damage the teflon coating. One point about teflon coated bushings is they, through normal usage will transfer some teflon onto the mating parts and that transferred material should be left intact.

good luck FishHog, May the straights be with you !

Thanks for the very informative reply Doc.

I'll give that a try and see how things go.

Forgot one thing, Check the 3 nylon slider shoes which contact the helix. I had one break once and the secondary wobbled quite a bit.

Could just be warped or cracked from excess heat from a worn belt.
