I'm wondering how these work in the cold weather. The cord is 24", long enough that the pack could be put somewhere in the engine comparment to keep it warm.
It would sure beat putting in a rectifier, regular, cig lighter, or battery. Just have to keep size C batteries on hand.
It's $30 assembled, and $20 unassembled. I'm sure it would be easy to put together.
Also, what kind of mounts do you use on the etrex?

Not too sure, one thing I will tell you is that $20 is a bit much. You can get an actual cig adapter cable for ~$11 on eBay and that battery holder is no more than $2 at Radio Shack. Not a bad idea all in all but I still question how long a pair of C's would last with the backlight on.
As for the mount, I just use the Garmin auto mount on the dash of my sled.

BeerMan -
How well does the Garmin Auto mount work for you? I saw the package in the store and it looks like the way it secures to the mount is by using the battery cover - is this right?
Again, I'm interested in your impression of that mount.
Thanks!

I used the marine mount and have had no problems what so ever. Marine mount's base provides holes for mounting screws. The automotive one you have to pretty much velcro down or something along those lines.

I use the marine mount too. Yes, they all mount off the battery cover but the setup is very durable. I rolled my sled like 6 times after hitting a pressure ridge on Lake Superior last winter and about the only thing that didn't break was my etrex and mount

Thats some tough testing.
But thanks for the durability report.

The Auto Mount works great. I have a base on my sled's dash and on my ATV. Very adjustable and no complaints. It does bounce around a bit while riding but I think that's to be expected with any mount. And yes, it comes with a replacement battery cover, that's how the unit is secured to the mount.

I just received my Ram u-bolt mount for an eTrex yesterday (from GPS Central; GREAT service), but haven't yet had a chance to install it. It looks good though. Hope it's stable enough for the vibrations of the sled.

I use the Ram mount on my handle bars and have not had any movement of the assembly due to vibration. 1600 miles so far with this set up and it's been solid as a rock.
I'm also using lithium batteries (non rechargable). They're somewhat expensive ($18 for four), but they last an unbelievable amount of time. Actually, I'm on my same two in the Etrex for all of those 1600 miles in temps ranging from 28F to -15F. I only turn the gps off when we stop on the trail. The battery symbol is still showing full. With the way these batteries are lasting, I see no need to have an alternate source from the sled. The draw back is using the back light. With it on, the batteries will deplete rather quickly...........I did a test. Leave the light off and they seem to last forever.

I use a $20 motorcycle radar detecter mount. Works awsome. I just mounted it on the handle bar out of my way.
