Question: I have an 02 Viper that has been a very good running sled since new until just yesterday. I took it out for the first ride of the year last night & was running strange.
I was only riding for 5min when it started acting up. When I would come to a slow down & let off the throttle it would start to miss ( like it was only running on 2 cyl) & I would watch the tach drop below 1kRPM almost to a stall & if I would throttle it, it would just bog out. (it would never stall) When I pulled up the choke I would watch the tack jump back to a perfect idle & could hear the engine running much smoother. It also would sometimes do this at speeds around 65-75 and one time the headlight flickered out for a second.
I rode last night for about 3hours on & off. It ran very good most of the time, but it was very consistent to run poor when I was not getting on it.
The sled is very well maintained, I just put new plugs in it yesterday before I started it, towards the end last season I cleaned the valves & carbs. It seems to me more of an electronic problem then a fuel problem to me- maybe a CDI or coil? ( I could be wrong) There are 1600 miles on the sled.
Just wondering if anyone has ran into anything like this. Thanks for any help!

Clean your carbs again. You may have done them at the end of the season, but some dirt may have gone through. Always go simple to the complex.

see if you have one cylander running cold,,,,if you do, swap the plug wires on the cold one and one of the hot ones,,,,,if you get no difference, (same cylander cold) you have narrowed your problem to fuel,,,,,(I am assuming you are getting air),,,,if the cylander that was cold is now hot, then you have a problem with your fire,,,,, (coil/plug wire/plug),,,,

thanks for the input guys. I tried to check for a cold cyl. by pulling out all the plugs when it first started acting up, but it was very hard to tell the difference between them. ( they all were pretty warm) I also was thinking about pulling the carbs, but the thing that makes me think & electrical problem is when I was moving along around 65 & the lights were flashed off & it started running poor. I think I will pull the carbs just because it is a quick & easy & hope this takes care of it. I am open to any other suggestions anyone may have though. Thanks again
