Hello,
I put a 87 phazer motor in a trike that i built, but i am having a slight problem. The motor will start and idle, but the second i give it any gas it seems to flood the motor. I have no clue what to do to fix it. any input would be great.

are you try to gravity feed it without a pump?

I'm not trying to be Mr. Obvious here, I'm more like Mr. Oblivious anyway. But, the first thing that poped into my head was "take the choke off" but... Do you have some wierd air filter blocking the air maybe?

I am running a gravity feed tank, but the pump it still connected. The Choke is off, and there is no air box on it at all.

If you're running it in the summer it's probably too rich. Not sure about which carbs are on that motor, but probably you can start by dropping the pilot jet 1 or 2 sizes, then if it's still rich in the midrange move the clip on the needle up one groove, then if it's still rich at wide open decrease the main 1 or 2 sizes. (be careful to do plug readings before and after you make these changes, or you might burn up if you make it too lean...)

Thanks a lot. I will try that. The only thing that makes me wonder about that is the fact that i have a sled with the same motor in it and it runs fine in the summer. I going to try it anyways. Thanks a bunch.

Hmm. Did you use the original clutches for the trike? I'd guess that if you put a different clutch or something with a different weight than the original clutch it could mess up how it runs...

I've got another idea, too. if your tank gravity feeds to the fuel pump and the tank sits higher on the trike than it would on the sled, it might be increasing the fuel delivery to the carbs. Maybe your needle valves are shot, or maybe the carbs sit at a different angle on the trike than they would on the sled. Take the carbs off and turn them upside down and try to blow in the fuel inlet. If you can blow through there the needle valves are shot. If you think the carbs are sitting at a different angle than they would on the sled, you might want to try adjusting the float height. Probably there is a little tang that hits on the needle valve which you could bend with a screwdriver to make the needle valve shut quicker...

What color are the plugs?

i agree with rampage. maybe more gas is leaking into the carb(s) then there should be. you also could be running it way to lean. i had this happen to me before. it would idle perfect soon as i gave it gas it would bog and die down. try flipping the choke on. either way lean or rich it will bog down. you might be getting enough low end(if its lean) and not enough top end when you give it gas. try flippin the choke on and see what happens

What are you seeing that makes you believe you are flooding it? Will it start back up again easily, or do you have to mess with it a while? Have you cleaned the carb(s)? Are you absolutely sure there is no gunk someplace inside the carb?

From your description of how the motor is acting, my guess would have been that the motor is lean..... It has enough fuel available to idle, but not enough for anything in addition to that?
