I just happened across this info on the MN DNR website:

Notice

As of July 1, 2004, the metal traction device (stud) permit is no longer needed for snowmobiles registered in Minnesota. However, you may not operate a snowmobile with metal traction devices on paved public trails, except when allowed by local government on trails under these jurisdictions or any portion of a paved state trail designated for such use by the commissioner. More information about Minnesota's metal traction device (stud) law.

Snowmobiles not registered in Minnesota must still bear a snowmobile state trail permit.

I heard that at a snow show but i wasn't sure so, today i had to get tags for the wifes sled and i asked them at the DMV. Sure enough, no permit.

With that $15 dollar savings per year then I can now buy a membership to MN_USA(state-wide snowmobile chapter)!

I am kidding of course since I am already a member.

I hadn't heard that but it is great news, especially for those of us who needed to buy more than one permit each year. Everything adds up - FAST.

Good, I was confused because I read that you did and didn't need a permit to have studs. Glad to hear I don't need that permit any more.

Sweet. Now if they would just open up the paved trails! Probably won't happen but it sure would open up some old territory I don't ride anymore.
Thanks for the info.

Most paved trails I have come across have another trail along side of it for those with studs. I know of a butt load of people who got nailed for riding with no stud permit, and it was a pretty hefty fine. Wonder if that had somethan to do with it being re-appealed. The volume of violators that is.

I think they should make a law that you have to have them.. It would probably save lives...
