I have a 98 FZ670 w/ARC suspension . There doesn't seem to be much clearance between the track and heat exchangers, and this is a problem since I want to stud it. I was told on this forum to just decrease the diameter of the top idlers. But I was also told to re-mount the top idler lower by re-drilling the mounting holes. Is this a ok way of gaining extra clearance ?

Hey,
How long of studs do you plan on running? How deep of a track do you have?

I ran a 99 FZ670 for a couple of years and became very familiar with that suspension. I went with the smaller diameter idlers and ran 1" studs with no problems, Drilling the brackets and remounting the cross shaft is an option, but in my opinion it is more risky because you have to maintain perfect mounting geometry for the cross shaft. And though it is possible to drill the brackets and have the holes in perfect alignment, it is more difficult and more likely to cause you some problems.

I hope this helps

Last year I removed the entire upper idler assembly and had no problems whatsoever. This past weekend I installed a new 1 inch track (original track was 1/2 inch lug) and for some reason I tried to reinstall the upper idlers again.

While adjusting my track tension with the engine running and track turning, I heard a slapping sound. It turns out that when the track ran over the upper idlers the lugs were hitting the tunnel protectors. Needless to say, I took off the idlers and it's not hitting anymore.

Needless to say, I probably won't be studding the track in the future. I figure, it would be too tight a fit and risk puncturing the exchangers.

Hey Q1000, what did you end up doing with the upper idlers?

I was looking inside the tunnel on my sled where the upper idlers were and noticed that the brackets for it also had other holes in it approx an inch below the shaft hole. All you would have to is finish drilling through the tunnel and remount the shaft...hence no need to purchase smallers wheels nor worry about aligning it all up properly as it already is.

Does yours have these brackets with the extra holes as well?

I didn't notice another set of holes, but I'll double check it tonight when I get home.

I'm running a 3/4" lug ( I measured from the out side of the track to the tip of the lug) and I'm not sure what size stud I'm going to use, and suggestions?

Ski doo sells smaller diameter upper idlers for this sled, exactly for this purpose. I had a set I was going to give you but can only find one of them.. lol sorry Dont drill new holes, it'll mess up the geometry becuase that shaft is also the upper shock mount.
