My Primary is making a grinding sound at idle and seems to go away when the clutch is engaged. This just started recently when I started the sled during the summer. My Brother was the last to ride it last season and he mentioned he had noticed it as well but did not rider it too far. It almost sound like a spring is grinding
its not a solid sound. I haven't had it a past, any idea what I should be looking for ??

New to the site, but not to sledding

Any help would be great

When was the last time the primary was rebuilt. They should be looked at every year, and at the least every two years depending on mileage. The spring might very well be broken. Chances are it needs a complete rebuild.

I didn't know the primary needs to be rebuilt on regular basis
I have a 77' Sno-Jet 440 that I haven't touch in 15 years and runs regulary
Looks like it a fairly easy rebuilt, have since seen a slide show someone had
nicely put together on this site. Is there a rebuilt kit ??? Something I can purchase from Royal Distributing, maybe I give them a call
It's great to have a site like this

Welcome to the site sled doo, there are many members in your area including me. We had our SW ride in haliburton last year.

Alot of the older sleds dont spin those primary's like the newer sleds. I have read many posts on this site about primary's grenading on people. It is not that much to rebuild them. The hardest part is getting the clutch itself off the shaft. There are step by step how to articles on rebuilding both primary and secondary clutches here at SW. The main springs will sag unless they are titanium and those are too pricey for my pocketbook. Last year I rebuilt both clutches in my wifes 2002 800 renegade. The springs needed replacing as did the rollers and pins. The buttons were also worn in the secondary

Ski-Doo TRA primarys don't need to be rebuilt every couple years (unless you ride 10k per year or more). I have about 7000 miles and 7 years on my clutches, and I have been through a couple sets of secondary buttons ($3 for a set of 3) and a couple primary springs. Everything else is still like new and can run for quite a long time before any rebuilding.

You just need to clean them about once a year, and they should outlast the rest of the sled. If you neglect them, then there could very well be some parts you need to replace (bushings, rollers, arms, ramps, etc..)

my sled has 14,2xx Km's on it and the guy i just bought it from said he's never had to rebuild the clutches, never noticed anything that needs to be replaced.

the sled has been kept amazingly well looked after, so i dont think the clutches were neglected, i dont really want to rebuild them this winter, would they be Ok until next winter? thanks- Neil
