Hi

I'm just getting back into sledding after being away for 15 years & picked up a 96 XLT Touring 600. I had a buddy with a ton of experience go over the sled with me (cleaning carbs, replacing those little plastic pucks in the secondary clutch, greasing her up etc) but he said I could do with replacing the spring in the primary clutch. I have a gold one and he suggested I go with an almond coloured one. That was last week - this week he's off for 3 weeks on a work trip.

Here's my question - what's with the colours (or colors for my American friends of the springs? He seemed to imply that there was a whole range of them for different applications if I remember correctly. Anybody know what he's talking about?

As you can see from what 1brent1 posted, the different springs have different weight ratings. If I remember correctly, the heavier the weight, the more the motor is going to have to rev before the clutch will engage. The more revs, the more you are getting into the power of the sled. Alot of it is how you like you clutch to engage. Also you can have to high on the engagement, it will kick in real hard.

Thanks for the answers!

I get it now. He was saying I'd notice a real increase in power with the almond clutch over the gold one I have now - so it'll rev a little higher before engaging and use more of the useful powerband. I'm not interested in turning the sled into a rocket ship (it IS a touring one after all...) but a little more power is always a good thing

Thanks again for the replies

myself,

i would go with the blue 120-300, that 140 -330 is to much spring,

it will engage WAY to hard, high,, i bet over 5000 rpm,and you will just over rev and never shift it out,

over rev kills power,if it takes you out of the power band,

i have a 97 xlt, the hot seat shift kit consisted of black 130-300 pri ,notched weights a little heavier ?,white sec spring,50-34.hsp helix with 2 shims for a 46-34 start angle.

i liked the kit better with stock weights, engagement was to harsh.

the kit is used, but very little,.if your interested in it let me know,im in WPG also

Greatly simplified, first weight rating controls engagement speed. Second controls rpm motor will hold at WOT.

Big engagement speeds make for a very busy sounding motor when just cruising - not something to look forward to on a touring machine? I would suggest finding out which spring came on sled originally and installing a fresh one. Do the secondary while you are at it. If that doesn't put the grin back on your face - then start experimenting FWIW

<<<<why change the spring at all?>>>>

Because they are most likely all sagged out if they haven't been changed in the last couple years and are way far away from their original specs.

A new set of ORIGINAL springs, a good inspection/cleaning of both drive and driven clutches (could be due for some buttons too), and a fresh belt will probably wake the that sled right up.......

We cleaned up & changed the plastic pucks (? - not sure what the actual term for them is) is the secondary clutch.

He was showing me how the clutch system works on the sled - the primary kind of "jumped" when it engaged, instead of being a smooth operation when it finally kicked in it was abrupt - if that makes sense. He said the spring was worn (sled does have 5500 miles on it) so changing it would be a good idea. As Michahicks said he told me it would seem like a new sled entirely after I changed the spring. Other than that it's i excellent condition - new belt - new belt and all. I bought it off a farmer who took good care of it.

He suggested going to Almond from the original Gold as a way to get some more performance. I said earlier I'm not after a rocket ship as it IS a touring sled and I'm going to be teaching my girlfriend to drive on it and I kind of want both of us to remain in one piece!! ;-)

<<<plastic pucks (? >>> - buttons

Kurt, you're welcome to try, but I'm sure you are going to find the almond is way too much spring. 800's use that spring with a completely different set of weights and secondary spring. The system needs to be balanced between all the variables. Guys that have been messing with them for years still end up loosing hair trying to get custom setups to run right.

Suggest you try the setup you have with the new spring. If you want to pep it up a little from there, try setting the spring preload in the secondary to the next hole. (eg: from the #2 to the #3) That won't change your engagement or WOT rpm, but you will see it carrying a little higher rpm on the trail, and it will back shift a little quicker when you turn up the wick a little.
