Gang,
Been across the border many times with out the sleds but am going to head north with the trailer and sleds for the first time.
Any of you experienced border jumpers have any tips for me. Obviously all my stuff is legal. Anything they frown on? Extra gas in the enclosed trailer?
Just looking to have it right!

just make sure you have all the registration papers for the ski-doo and trailer and your on your way ....

MAX- I just got back from Muskoka after 3 days riding.Fantastic trails! No problems in 30+ years of going across the bridge.Just make sure you have picture ID and all your sleds/trailer paperwork ready to hand to the Canadian Customs fella or girl.I take gas across everytime in my enclosed trailer and to be honest, they have never asked to open my trailer once! Just answer the questions they ask and don't offer any humor or ask them anything much.Good luck.

Happy Holidays-have a great trip! One thing I heard-on your safety chains hooks, make sure they are closed loop not just 'S' hooks. I keep a pair in the van just for that purpose.

I've been across at the Soo many times and they look in my trailer about half the time. They have even specifically asked about gas in cans, so we only fill up the sleds before we go over. Make sure you have proof of insurance for your sleds, it is a requirement in Ontario. Can't wait for the first ride up there. Good luck.

i dont know about ontario, however we had a big problem last year with the other new york entrance into canada(rt15) from the northway....we got stopped at border, 2 trucks and 6 guys, 2 of the guys had dwi's going as far back as 1993. both paid there debt to society and are good guys, howevr canada didnt seem to think so. they denied them entrance in, and in order to get in they had to make a donation for $500(at that time) to canada, each.we were detained there for 2 hours and then after getting denied , going back into america sucked also.after going 15 feet into canada, america border patrol went through my buddies truck/trailer/sleds, had the dogs sniffing for drugs..........that was another 2 hours..............................in all a total of 14 hours of driving and aggravation, we wound up going to old forge.................where..................20 minutes after we get there...................i get blasted(t-boned) from another sled..................................after all that........still had a great time :bash:

Gary- had a good ride up North.2 days-308 miles. Trails were limited, but nicely groomed.No lake running as of yet.As for the trailer safety chains, all my trailers have been converted to the HD hooks with snap closeures.The OPP on the 407 highway have made alot of $$ on us Americans using the standard S hooks that come standard on our trailers.Also when snapping the hooks onto the hitch, they want the hooks facing the trailer for some unknown reason. The reason I know this is 3 seasons ago a convoy of sledders were on their way North on the 407 and they all got ticketed. Thus all mine are now changed. I got all my hooks from Northern Tool.

The United States has the same rules.
A DUI, DWI or whatever else you want to call it are considered a criminal offense. Therefore it's your friend's criminal record that prevented them from gaining entry into Canada. I had the same problem getting into the US for an offense committed many years earlier. I also had to make a substantial donation (as you call it) to the US.
That's why it pays to know all of the requirements before you go.

Just to update my first experience with crossing the border. We crossed in Lewiston NY thursday night, waited about 1/2 hour on the bridge and after showing only our licenses to the gaurd he waved us on. Never looked in the trailer, only inquired about how long and if we had firearms.
Reentered at Niagara Falls with no waiting and only showing licenses again. No problems what so ever!

I was wondering as well, why not just leave the hooks on? The way some roads are during the winter (Hwy. #11 near Temagami  ) why anyone would use the S hooks. In Ontario, we've closed hooks as long as I can remember. Is there a reason the trailer makers don't build them w/ proper hooks? The added cost would seem like a lame excuse.
