I bought two used snowmobiles this year - 98 SkiDoo SLE 500 Touring and a 2001 MXZ 700. I've put on about 300 miles now in the last couple of weeks. I've noticed that I get extremely good gas mileage on the MXZ compared to the F7's, Polaris XC700's, and the Rev. 600. In fact I would say almost twice as good and riding the machines together from gas pump to gas pump. Now today I had both machines out together for about 80 miles and at the gas pump they were nearly identical for mileage!!!!
I'm certainly not complaining. I laughed a lot at the other 700's but I started to worry when I got the same mileage as a 500 fan cooled machine. I don't have much experience with snowmobiles (about 300 miles in my entire life). It seems to perform right there with the other 700's and I've been about 50/50 trail riding and lake riding in cold weather (+5 to -20F). Is this common for the MXZ 700? I'd feel better if some other MXZ people would tell me that's how it's supposed to be. I find myself staring at the machine after I fill it up wondering if there's maybe another place I'm supposed to put more gas......
I was very unhappy with my gas sucking pig 02 700 mxz. The thing ran out of gas with only 87 miles on the tank last year. I didn't try to investigate why,I just traded it for an SDI that gets better than 15 mpg.

a few comments to make-
WOT or near WOT for extended periods of time will destroy your gas mileage. if you ride like that (lots of lakes, powder, etc) expect mileage you can count on one hand. if you go easy on it on the trails you will get pretty good mileage. varaitations of +/- 8 mpg between riding styles would not be uncommin.
fan cooled sleds, generaly, do not get the best fuel economy. few reasons for this, first off the are jetted richer than their l/c counterparts to help cool off the engine. seccond, they make a lot less horsepower than comparable displacement l/c sleds, so if you've got a fan guy trying to keep up with l/c sleds, hes going to be on the gas a lot more.

I have a 2000 Mxz 700 and also get great mileage and its good on oil too. I can compare when filling up to a Cat ZL 500! I can reach over 100 miles to a tank. I ride pretty hard too. though WOT riding will kill the mileage.
