From the Jan. 17 issue of SnowWeek:
Quote:
There Ought To Be A Law...
We've always found them annoying, and apparently decision-makers in Michigan agree: headlight covers are not cool. As of march 2004, Michigan has outlawed the use of colored headlight covers on snowmobiles. The law, which was supported by the Michigan Snowmobile Association, was made mainly for safety reasons. The argument for the law claims that placing colored inserts over headlights reduces visibility and increased the chances of drivers over-running headlights. There had also been reported cases of mistaken identity: red-covered headlights being confused with tailights and red or blue covered headlights mistaken for law enforcement officers.

Good! I hate when someone with a red covered light is approaching me on the trail. It always looks like a tail light.
I've never understood the purpose of them, or why anyone would want to spend the money to make their headlight ineffective.

A few years ago while sitting in traffic after a race @ MIS in Brooklyn, I saw a state trooper approach an IROC that had headlight covers. The driver got out, took the headlight covers off, then went to the back & took the covers off the tailights.

They look kinda cool but why in the world would you have them on at night? It's hard enough to see w/o them.

i run a yellow one and found it to help a bit at dusk . the yellow shined off the tops of the bumps so you could see them better. dammm i hate those kidney busters you see when its to late .
now that the law changed i modified mine by cutting holes in it. the same size and shape as the rev headlight . so i have the same area of surface of clear lighting as the rev. it dosent work as well as before but i liked the looks of it too.

I had the light green ones on mine,,, loved them. But I always took them off as it started to get dark. I wanted all the light that the sled would give me. I also wanted anyone coming at me to know I was there. I still carry them in my windshield bag and pop them on at stops as they do look pretty kewl,,, but I wont be riding with them in Michigan from now on. Thanks Kris for pointing that out. I had heard that rumor but didnt know for sure.

Just a perfect example of Aunt Jen and her scare tactic Michigan Government. Worried about headlight covers, and not the real topics related to snowmobiling.

Compared to years gone by very low numbers of folks even ride at night any more so I really don't understand making it such a big issue. I don't use em myself but do agree they look cool on some sleds.

One thing about sleds w/ headlight covers, when they get in the middle of your group & none of your buddies have 1, you know to pull over & let them pass.
