I posted a while ago about my temp light coming on after riding, thought i had the problem solved by bleeding cooling system, but when i was looking in my coolant bottle i discovered some very fine small metal shavings(picked them up with magnet). Would these be from the water pump going or what do you think? I had the top end redone last year(new pistons, rings, replated cylinders). It is not leaking coolant, heat exchangers are in good shape, what could it be? Thanks for any and all replies.

Could the shavings have been from when the top end was redone. And now the shavings are clogging up the thermostat and causing it to not open, which would explain the temp light coming on? I don't know if this is a possibility, i don't have much experience working on sleds. Anyone have any ideas? I need help.

You mentioned only that it USED to overheat, and that you have found some metal shavings in the coolant bottle. What model sled is this? Is it still overheating? Are you running in conditions that may have caused this? Have you installed any of the fixes (long flap, aux cooler) available from Polaris?
I don't have a clue where metal shavings may have come from. Are you just seeing a few specks, or do you have a heavy accumalation in the bottom of your bottle? A few specks and I would ignore them, anything else and I might be talking to the folks that did your motor.

It never actually overheated, the temp light came on and i shut it down. This happened the first ride this year after the rebuild, light came on after app.15 miles of riding in good snow conditions. The sled is a 2001 xcsp 600cc. I personally have not installed any fixes from Polaris, bought the sled used, so i don't know if any of this has been done, snow flap is factory original. Shavings in coolant bottle were floating at top, i wouldn't say there were alot of them, i got most of them out with a magnet the size of a pencil eraser and there was probably enough to cover magnet head 2 times. Very thin shavings, the largest being the diameter of say, a small ladybug. Light did not come on after i let it cool down, i rode it probably another 20 miles. Have not had a chance to ride it since, to much work, lack of snow. I did go to dealer and asked about recalls, service bulletins, and he couldn't find any for that sled. Maybe i should stop worrying about it and just ride it, i don't know, just hate to go all the way up north again and have problems like last year. What do you think, take my chances?

I also checked plugs after this happened and they were perfect, golden brown.

I hate just ignoring something like that. When the light came on last time, had you already bled the air out of the system prior to that, or have you done it since? I don't know about the dealer. Seems like he should have been able to tell you about both of those problems.
If the problem has occured since you bled it, and you are convinced there is no more air in it, I would invest in the longer flap, and maybe a new temp sensor, to try and eliminate the trouble. If you still have a problem, that's a great machine, and worth the trouble of having the aux cooler installed. I understand the price of the kit is very reasonable. Something like 75.00.
I've also heard there are some people that have had a problem with the coolant bottle. It gets to the point where the cap doesn't fit securely. I'm assuming, because you haven't mentioned it, that you are OK there.

No, I had not bled the air out since the light came on. After it came on, i stopped and let it cool down, then i opened the coolant bottle and it let out a big burp, would this have bled it, or should i loosen the bleeder screw and do it that way?
I think my coolant bottle is ok because when i opened it, it was pressurized, and the problem i had heard with them was the opening getting oval and leaking. Does that make sense? Thanks for the input.

Sounds like the bottle is OK. I would definitely make an attempt to get all the air out you can. Raise the front of the sled up a foot or so, bleed and refill to correct level.
