you're on the right track if you sand it. make sure there is no oil on the pipe even if you have to burn it off with a flame. get exhaust pipe paint its got a hotter flame point, not like engine paint that will burn off at 6-700 degrees.

I use BBQ high heat paint, and it stays on for the season not one ride. As paul said make sure the pipe is clean before painting. I put three coats on the pipe and y pipe. Putting the pipe on the woodstove inbetween each coat to help it bake on. Spray pipe with WD 40 in off season and always spray the road salt off, If you doo this your pipes should last for many many seasons.

As an auto restorer, I have to recommend www.eastwood.com for such a project. They sell specialty paints and coatings designed for headers and exhaust manifolds on show cars.. Some of their products will withstand 1,200 degrees F and it works.

ceramic will hold too much heat in alot of cases and especially if you have your jetting spot on for the stock pipe.

I used the high temp BBQ paint after sanding down my pipe, I went over the pipe with brake cleaner when I was done sanding to make sure there was no oil and so far it has worked out great this year.
