my 500 efi will not start, the fuel is not running, i checked the relay which is ok and i "hot wired" the fuel pump which it works then... is there some type of "crank sensor" that "tells" the fuel pump to turn on?
'93 and up 500 efi models used the signal from the lighting
coil to trigger the efi system.
when the recoil rope is pulled, the lighting coil
will put out voltage that the ecu senses.
then the ecu will power up the efi and and start and run the
fuel pump until proper pressure is built up.
it is possible to start the efi without a dead battery by
removing the airbox and using starting fluid to get the
motor to fire and spin enough to getthe charging system going.
however, it's pretty dangerous.
you need to have a good battery and battery connections
for the efi to work as it should.
i bet that yor battery is junk and/or you have some poor connections.
these are the first things to check.
My cousin had similar trouble, although he ended up getting a another fuel pump. But then he diagnosed another problem, capacitor or regulator or somehting like that. I will email him to find out.
I got a reply from my cousin regarding his problem on his Indy 500:
"It was called a "dropping resistor", meant to drop the voltage to the injectors from 12 to 5 volts each. If he has a manual it should say how to test it. Hope it helps. "
