Got the case apart and it's full of shavings, what's the best way to clean all that crap out of the bearings, just use a parts washer then repack them?

Shavings in the bearings? I would think the best way, if not only way, to clean them is to replace them. While it is out it might be a good idea to take the crankshaft to the dealer and have it checked in the crank jig for trueness. The factory seems to have a good rebuild program, so get back a like new complete crankshaft assembly.

I have not been following your dilema but it sure sounds bad. If you got shavings in your bearings you got more trouble ahead if you try to clean them and reassemble. There is already signs of wear I would imagine. I suggest getting a remanufactured crank assembly for it. If you are that far into it. I would spend the money for a peice of mind next winter. Also any idea as to what caused this?
