I am struggling with finding the right setup for my 1999 mach z. I am racing 500ft in grass, I just put in a straight 44 helix with red spring set at 24# 26# 28# tried all three. changed ramps to 280s with yellow spring, pin weight started at 20 now is 18grams. clickers at #4, I cannot get the rpms to go over 8000 should I give up on the 280 ramps and just go back to the 286s or 295s.

sled runs 8400rpm for max hp which is 164. Onlything done to sled is the port timing is differant.

Yellow is pretty light. try something in the 410 finish range. Red or Black depending on what engagement you want. 280's are fine. Try a heavier spring and add pin to get revs. 54/48 in the back??

Although I have never tried the 280 ramps, they look very similar to the 145's. They like heavy pins and big springs. I was always told that the big ramps like the 280's, 145's and PX like short distances.
When I had that combo in my 97 Mach 1, I was running 22g on the pins and a 250-460 spring, 44 black ice helix with about 20 lbs preload (basically equal to a 48 degree doo helix). The thing pulled seriously hard out of the hole, it was a great setup for short drag races. It wasn't the best for all around trail riding.
Who's helix is that 44?
A heavier spring will bring those rpms up.

micro belmont made the helix. I think I'll try the black spring that was in the machine when I purchased the machine.

I am trying to buy a spring online but I see a lot of them are rated in colors how do I know what to buy, is there a chart or do you have to ask the manufature.

There's a chart in the race manual, and I think there's one milling around either here or on Dootalk. Actually it's in the Ski-Doo forum here at SW, under "SKIDOO FORUM SPECIAL INFORMATION".
According to my race manual, a black primary spring is 185-410. Definately try that spring and see what it does for you.
A yellow doo spring is 160-270. That would explain your low rpms.
If you're not talking Ski-Doo springs, most other manufacturer's have different color codes, so you just have to compare the start/end lb. loads.

[Alright this is what I did, I ordered a big spring 250/465 put 280 ramps in with 20 grams of pin weight 44 helix@24lbs. I could not get over 8000 rpms did 2 passes @500ft. So I went back to stock helix 50/47@ 24lbs, sled seemed to pull a little harder out of the hole but still cant get sled over 8000 rps also 2 passes.
So I went back into the garage and took the 280s out and put the 286s in. The sled came alive. For some reason I cannot get the 280s + rps to work with this sled? What I was wondering with this 465lb spring will there less belt sqeeze on top with such a stiff spring and 286 ramps? Sled seemed to run the best with 286s.
