If I use a marker on the primary clutch to see if sled is shifting all the way out in 500ft how much of the mark should be left.
I did this test and there is a mark 3/4" long left? Sound right?

Is this the primary on your 99 mach? I will have my clutch apart in the next week or so and I will measure what is actual max top distance you can achieve.

If you're shifting all the way out, there will be no mark left at all on the clutch sheaves.
With 3/4" mark left, you can still gear down quite a bit to get more acceleration, at least if traction isn't an issue yet.
What gears are you running?

Alright this is what I did, I ordered a big spring 250/465 put 280 ramps in with 20 grams of pin weight 44 helix@24lbs. I could not get over 8000 rpms did 2 passes @500ft. So I went back to stock helix 50/47@ 24lbs, sled seemed to pull a little harder out of the hole but still cant get sled over 8000 rps also 2 passes.
So I went back into the garage and took the 280s out and put the 286s in. The sled came alive. For some reason I cannot get the 280s + rps to work with this sled? What I was wondering with this 465lb spring will there be less belt sqeeze on top with such a stiff spring and 286 ramps? Sled seemed to run the best with 286s.

Most manufacturers gear for about 10 mph faster than the sled can go to keep the belt away from overdrive. They find that the maximum speed is actually achieved near 1:1 instead of in overdrive because a loss of efficiency occurs with the faster belt speed that occurs in OD.
If your sled is geared 10 mph faster than it has HP to go, the belt will NEVER make it to full shift, nor will you want it to. You may change gears to get it to fully shift and find you lose top end.

OK, I can learn something here. What did you mean by "if traction isn't an issue yet"? Will he lose traction (spin the track on holeshot) if he gears down too far? And can you define gearing down (faster or slower on far end). Thanks.
