First let me thank SW for such a great website. Just recently I picked up my first sled. A 96 FIII with 3,000 miles and a blown engine (piston, crank, everything destroyed). So I found a used engine w/ good compression (135,140,143) that came with Crankshop pipes and silencers all for $500. I've heard of a case modification to prevent main bearing problems by drilling a second oil port for the mains. If this is indeed true does anyone have any information on this modification please share. Second, is there anything I can do in terms of preventive maintence to help ensure a full season? And third, If I do use the Crankshop pipes how should I jet the carbs. Thanks in advance

the last tripple i had apart instead of drilling the hole out i just packed the PTO side bearings with iso-flex grease. drilling the hole out is ok but the last few year tripples (800`s anyway) the hole was not drilled out but the PTO bearings were packed with iso-flex.

Be careful if you choose to run Isoflex grease. You will need to upgrade the inner PTO bearing with a sealed unit (bearing race seal on crankcase side) otherwise the engine's fuel / oil supply will contaminate the grease. Use genuine Isoflex grease as some substitutes are inferior

I understand what your saying about the sealed bearing. But where would I get it? What 800's had them so I can order a part for one of those. What does the new bearing require in terms of assembly??(special tools?). I am a mechanic but work on cars and boats. Also the old PTO side connecting rod bearing went on the old engine. Any suggestions in preventing this? I'm just trying to take all precautions before the snow while I'm still patient. Thanks
