I hope someone out there can help me with my problem. These are the symtpoms:

2005 MXZ 600 Carb

1
The sled is hard to start both warm and cold. When riding on the trail and I shut off the engine it will usually take 3-5 pulls to start. It won't even cough or sputter for a few pulls then it starts right up and runs perfect. Even cold starting will take about 7 pulls. The sled won't even try to start or kinda start. It is like it is not getting spart and then all of a sudden it starts and runs perfect.

2
When the sled is idling the speedometer reads 0 then if i give it a little gas the speedo runs up to 120 mph and stays there until it goes back to idle and the odometer reads 136 until it goes back to idle then it reads the actual mileage of the sled.

3
When idling, the sleds headlight is brite. If I give it throttle the light dims, not a lot but some. I have never seen this on anything before. Usually when you give anything some gas the light will brighten.

4
I can almost never get the rer to work. The sled will die 9 out of 10 times. I hit the rer button and the sled just dies.

I hope someone out there can help me with some things to check or change.

Other than these few symtoms the sled runs perfect.

Thanks for your help.

For your starting problem and your RER I would first check the condition of the engine. A leak down test of the cylinders will confirm if your rings are bad. Bad rings will make it hard to start as well as make it stall going into reverse. A compression test may not indicate a problem as mine showed great compression but 50% leakage past the rings when we did a leak down test. I have found some really really bad reeds on some of these engines as well. Once i replaced my reeds my sled starts on the first or second pull.
As for the rest of your problems you appear to have an electrical problem of some sort. This may be part of your engine problems as well though. I would get my hands on a wiring diagram and trace all grounds and make sure they are in good shape. If they all check out then it's time to dig deaper. Do you still have warrenty ?

for sure a bad ground will cause some goofy problems so i'd be looking for that first. hopefully that will staighten out the rest of your troubles like tough to start but the hard start is likely and look last at that for the ring problem.
