280's are a better race ramp, they shift fast. Go with the 286's good performance ramp.

You'll get different answers to this. Lots of people will say the 280s are 'drag race' ramps, but I have them in my 800 twin, and they seem to work good on the trail for me. You need to have enough power to climb the ramp and still run enough springs/helix to still have good backshift. You should be able to get a trail-worthy setup for a mach z using 280s. Most of the 280 trail setups I've seen use a dual plane helix. The other thing I would say about 280s on the trail is they're not for light guys/sleds or poor traction conditions. You will put alot of power to the ground with 280s and if you can't get it to hook up then they won't work out...

We'll i'am 320 pounds i'am currently running the 286's with 19.5 gram pin weight along with i believe its a 200-380 primary spring , The secondary has a straight 50 helix with the spring set at 24 pounds , with stock gearing , I think i should gear down to a 25/43 becouse of my weight i dont believe i would lose any top speed any thoughts :bash:

@ 320# you would be better off with a 21 or 22 top gear.
You will find EVERYTHING works better, even your top end.
Stay away from the 280's too aggressive.

I'm not trying to bash, but I still don't really understand why lots of people say that. As long as you can get it to backshift, what is the downside to 'aggressive' ramps?

It's always been my understanding that the agressive ramps shift really fast, and are only good for short drag races. I also know a friend's 00 Mach Z that he uses for lake racing has them in it, with a pretty low angled helix, stiff primary spring, heavy pins, and it works very well on the lakes and on the trails.

mikadoo big guy wants to get it moving. I was at my buddys and looked at his notes ,fastest mph setup was with 286 ramps. he would shoot me if I posted the rest. he runs 280s in the trail.

Did a run at the Grand Marais airport runway last Wed. [closed for winter of course] with my 250# arse 21/44 gears and a 136" x 1.5 track it did 105 on my speedo. And get this, with my single pipe on too, only 5 mph slower than with the triples!
This is also with 286 ramps but has Joey's secret helix that really makes it rock.
