my niece Jenna had to right a essay for school so she chose to write about my grandfather and about how she regretted not knowing because he died in 1987 long before she was born anyway my grandfather was a avid snowmobiler and my family has carried of this great outdoor tradition i thought i would share this essay about my grandfather hopefully others will share there family history of snowmobiling
so here it is SWRules
my Grandpa Hitch By Jenna Nash I regret never knowing my Grandpa Hitch, because recently I discovered what a special and talented person he was. He was a very kind and a hard working man, who invested most of his time in his family. He enjoyed working, building, hunting, and snowmobiling. Many of these activities have become traditions in my family.
Claude Basil Hitch was born in 1924, in Gladstone Michigan a city in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. An only child he grew up during the great depression. The main source of income for his family was selling blueberries that they picked themselves. For extra money, he delivered groceries on his bicycle. The marriage to my grandma Mildred Hitch occurred on march 14, 1943. They had three children and eventually seven grandchildren.
Besides the great depression my grandpa was also almost a part of world war II. He joined the army in 1942, and was stationed in South Carolina. Before he was shipped of to war, his platoon came down with spinal meningitis. Most of his fellow platoon members died. Thankfully my grandpa recovered after many months in a army hospital. Immediately after he was released with an honorable discharge and he returned home.
My mother and grandmother have many fond memories of him; and every vacation was spent up north in the cottages he had built. He made his children ice skating ponds every winter. He also made kites out of newspapers every spring and he made whistles out of real tree branches. My mom still remembers the songs he use to sing and the stories he use to tell. He even had nicknames for all of his grandchildren. Most of all they remember the winters snowmobiling.
My grandpa, Claude Hitch, was truly remarkable. His legacy is a family taught to appreciate the outdoors. His honesty, sense of responsibility and love of hard work are carried on in the people he has left behind.

Nice thread!

I don't have a snowmobile backround in my family except for an uncle I'm very close to. He owned a snowmobile around the 80s. He rode it mostly in VT (Mt. Elmore???). He stopped sledding after he sold that sled. I'm trying to convince him to come on a trip with us. My uncle is now 80 yrs old and in great health.

I have an old pic of him, my aunt (his wife), and my cousin. If anyone can help with the year of the sled that'll be great!
