I have a 1997 Polaris Indy Trail with the 488 Fan Cooled motor. He is my problem. I recently pulled them out of storage. It fired right up after I checked everything and put the new plugs in it. I let it run for awhile then loaded it onto the trailer. I took it to a garage where I work and gave it a good washing last Friday. This garage is heated. I then let them (I say them because there was 2 others on the trailer) sit on the trailer in the heated garage until Sunday afternoon. I picked them up Sunday afternoon at about 12:15 PM and took them home. I went inside to watch the Vikings game (that we will not talk about). After the game I came outside to take all the snowmobiles off the trailer and load them into my garage. When it came to taking the Polaris off the trailer the Pull rope would not even budge. I manhandled it off the trailer and into the garage after about 30 minutes of frustration. I thought maybe the recoil got froze from maybe some water still in there. It was cold on Sunday when they were outside.

When I got it inside the my garage, which is not heated, I got out a hairdryer and hit the recoil for a long time to no luck. I started to think about what to do as I am not the greatest mechanic in the world. I then thought about trying to move the clutch. I poped the belt cover and tried to move the clutch to no luck also. It is stuck pretty good. I am thinking I might have a huge problem here. Where could I start looking or trying.

Thanks for the replys.

You say you ran it before you loaded it onto the trailer ... did you shut it down or did it quit on its own?

Remove the plugs and look inside, what do you see?

ok I am dumb.....it was just froze from some ice I believe. I took out the old heat gun. Held it to the recoil for about 3 minutes, hit the clutch side for 3 minutes and bingo rotate freely with no noise. Putt the plugs back in, hit the choke, gave it a light pull and fired right up. Put it on the driveway, lifted the rear end hit the throttle and right up to 90mph the thing went, left it run while I went down to subway for a bite to eat, came back to find it still running. Have to love that.

i have a story her it goes.....

last fall time we where having a party at my friends house and start talking sleds few hours pass and blah blah.So next thing where out in the grage and fire up his sled (just got new pipes had to show off) using a chunk of good old birch fire wood we prop the sled up and let it rip and rip some more till it was screaming. BANG! it kicks out and his sled flys into a 94 indy 340 that was 15 ft in front of it. The look on his face was pricless. Few phone calls from the people next door but thing where great, nearest cop is 65 km away.

My wifes 97 trail has this problem every now and then. Melted snow or rain water will collect and freeze at the bottom of the recoil when left uncovered outside. I about wigged the first time it happened to me. Thought for sure the had motor siezed. Now I keep the heat gun handy or keep it covered when outside.
