While snowmobiles will be flying through the air during Friday Night Thunder at the World Championship Snowmobile Derby in January, fireworks won’t.

The Eagle River City Council voted to deny 5-D Promotions’ application for a fireworks permit last week.

It was an emotional special City Council meeting attended by Northland Pines Administrator Mike Richie, Eagle River Area Fire Department Chief Pat Weber, Chief of Police Sig Hjemvick and 5-D Promotions event manager Todd Achterberg.

Mayor Jeff Hyslop had to break two tie votes, including one that called for tabling any action until January, the month of the Derby. That motion was defeated.

Voting “yes” on a motion to deny the permit were council members George Meadows and Carol Hendricks, and voting against the motion to deny were council members Jerry Burkett and Kim Schaffer. Hyslop then cast the deciding vote to deny the permit.[/b]
