I have a 1995 Ski-doo Formula 583 and let me tell ya trying to start her can be a real tough job, espicially if the engine is real cold. What I am saying is the pull starter is just flat out hard to pull to get the engine to turn over. No actual engine starting issues, just real tough to turn over the engine. I was wondering if any one else has this same problem, or is it just common on this sled? and is there anything you can do to make turning over the engine any easier? can gears or whatever be changed out in the recoil starter, is that possible? Any thoughts ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same sled and had it tuned up recently. When the mechanic tried to start it he noticed that it was a very hard pull. The first thing he looked at was the drive belt. To;d me it was to wide. He replaced it with a brp belt and then tried it again. Much easier. The belt I had on was a "jobber" and though it was the belt for the sled it wasn't the same width as an oem belt. Installed oem belt and kept the jobber one for emergencies.

If its like any other ski-doo I know from that era, its probably normal , lol. I have a 94 583 and well... its two arms all the time to pull it over unless you want to throw out your shoulder.

its normal 583s than had small diameter recoils making it harder to pull vs other sleds

Thank you, I will check out the Belt to see if that is the problem.

If anything else, it's telling you your cylinders still have good compression. It's all good!!
