while leafing through the manual... is says there is "no acceptable test procedure available for the CDI conroll unit" 1st off.. check to see if the wiring is intact- no cracks in wires.. connectors.. etc.. etc... I had a similiar problem with my Mach Z and it turned out to be the stator(exciter coil)... I changed it out.. and was good to go... if you want to check the stator (exciter coil)... the procedure is as follows... you'll need a mulit meter... to test the resistance ... Rx1 scale... I'm not sure what the spec for a 2001 500 is..or the colour of the wires are... the dealer should be able to tell you... but on earlier models the manual says exciter coil- brown/white wire to black/red should read 164 ohms + - 10% another thing to check might be the throttle safety switch(for stuck throttles) disconnect it and check for spark... good luck...

I'm sure if you check to see if there is resistance in the CDI/coil pack.. it should be fine.. I have a couple of CDI's... I know work.. and will check them out.. and post the results...

ok... I went and checked out the situ on a CDI.. (I know this unit works) it's off a 94 500(was running now a parts sled). the brown/white wire to the red /black = 100 ohms the white to red black 160 ohms your wires may be of different colours being a later model... hope this is of some help...
