Does anyone know the symptoms of a bad stator?

A stator is like an altenator on a car....your lights may go really dim or not work at all. Your power valves might not open up, not much fire....it will act as if you have a scuffed piston, hard to start and will barely idle but will work fine at higher rpm...if power valves open. There is a test you can do but I don't know the right current readings.

Thanks thundergreg25. It doesn't sound like a bad stator cause it doesn't pull the full rpms at full throttle. It sounds like a fouled plug. Thanks for the help.

In my 1998 powder special 600 efi the stator started out my causeing the engine to run rich, I had to replace the spark plugs every 200 miles. And when it finally shorted completly out it never had spark. My buddies 600 ps with carbs started backfiring just before the stator went bad. Currently mine is being rebuilt at a company in massachuests. Stealer wanted $500.00 for a new one and a rebuilt one is $125.00. good luck

I think someone told me the other night cat had some bad stators in that year range. They all go after some time so it may be worth the 125 to have it rebuilt. Unless dieing 50 miles from civlazation is not a problem for you?

I own a '97 ZR580 and had my stator go out last spring. My sled started no prob and idled no prob, but as soon as you gave it any gas it would bog down big time.

had no power, would get to about 5500-6000rpms. Felt like I was flooding the machine out, when i gave it more throttle, but like i said, idling it ran like a charm. got a new stator and runs like a charm, actually more response than i ever remember.
