I just finally took my carbs apart on my wifes 98 formula z 583, they have never been apart since I bought it new. Everything looks spotless, am I looking in the wrong places on the carb, but It seems it would be a little dirty after 4000 miles! This is the first carb I have taken apart. :0: SWRules

Pull the mains and pilots and check for gunk. Also check the needle jets (the brass tube your mains screw into).
You can easily be fooled by looking at these jets. A "clean" looking varnish can build up on them making their appearence look good when in fact the tiny holes are smaller than what they should be. Give em a good scratch around/in the holes with a pin. The pilots only run a buck or so and are just as easily replaced.

You can't always see the "Gunk" that builds up in the seats of the jets and surfaces. Use a good solvent to soak the parts in, and use a brass brush, and little pointy things to get into the little holes before your done. Replace all the gaskets, and make sure they're dry when you remount them.

You unscrew them.

The main jets and needle jets can be cleaned with pipe cleaners doused with carb cleaner spray. Pilot jets really can't be cleaned perfectly, so you should replace them with brand-spanking-new at the beginning of every season (best way to be safe and avoid a lot of headaches).

Hope that helps.

Yes, the Main jet comes out with a 6mm socket. The Pilot is a flathead screwdriver. And do what all the other guys said for cleaning. The carb cleaner in the aerosol cans works good.

Which parts of the carb are already adjusted to certain specs and need to be put back a certain way, or just take it all apart and put back together? SWRules

Teabagger,
Our sled stable is almost the same! I have a 200 MXZ 700, Wifes sled is also a 98 583 Formula Z. My brother has a 2002 MXZ 700. How does your wife like her sled? Does she foul a lot of plugs? Mine does, she likes to look at the scenery too much while riding( too slow!). Thinking of getting a ADBoivin kit for her sled. How is the MXZ700? This will be my first year with mine, last sled was a 96 583 MXZ.

Actually, the Formula z used to be mine and I would always foul out the right cylinder. As soon as my wife started driving it, no more fouling. Kind of strange, but as soon as I jump back on and hit the throttle hard I foul the right cylinder. The dealer looked the sled over and made some adjustments which worked for a while, but then the fouling started again. Im stumped?? The 02 700 rocks, tons of power and once I got the suspension dialed in it rode great, My friends with new Cats and Polaris's couldn't believe how well the sled handled the moguls compared to their new sleds.
