I know this is really not snowmobile related but i wanted to get some exposure... a buddy was telling me today that an ingenious cop during a car chase pursued an SUV onto a lake and they both broke through is this true? i want to see pics to show around the office

I haven't heard anything about this but I would love to see the pics. I'll have to ask my relatives in the MN if they have heard anything and if there are any pics in the newspaper.

Yes, this did happen. I'm not sure which department, but I believe it was in the metro area. It was on the news a couple nights ago.

Question

Yes it did happen. It was a Menommen County Sheriff's Deputy. I'm a cop and I love to give chase but there is no way in hell I would ever chase anyone out onto the lakes this year. This person is going to have a lot of explaining to do to the sheriff. If it would have been me I would have had a size 12 boot in my ###!!!!!

Question

fleeing vehicle breaking through ice
Rosalind Bentley
Star Tribune

Published Jan. 1, 2003 CHAS01

A 14-mile chase ended Tuesday when a police car and the car it was pursuing broke through the ice on Sargent Lake in Mahnomen County, in northwestern Minnesota.

A White Earth police officer began chasing a car on County Rd. 25 just before 2 a.m., the Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department said.

The chase led onto Sargent Lake, east of Mahnomen, where the cars went through the ice. The police car was found partially submerged, and two Mahnomen County sheriff's deputies rescued the White Earth officer.

Authorities found the car that was being pursued with a man and woman sitting on the roof, about 150 yards from the police car.

For the next several hours, paramedics and police tried to rescue the pair, finally reaching them by boat at about 4:30 a.m.

The woman was taken to MeritCare hospital in Fargo, N.D., where she was listed in good condition. The man was treated at Mahnomen Hospital and was later arrested, the Sheriff's Department said.

The White Earth officer also was treated at Mahnomen Hospital and released
