1989 EXT 530 no spark

My other sons cat just died. We've been having trouble with this sled for a while with plugs. He would have to change them at least 3 times a season [maybe ride 400 k in the season]I thought it was getting to much oil.Any way he went to go out the other night and he said it back fired and he saw sparks under the cowling and it died.I tested for spark and at first it had spark on one cyl. then there was none.I checked the coil for cont. and it seemed okay. But I'm not sure I was testing it right.Any idea where to look and how to test coil?

i think to test coils you need to check for resistance but im not sure what the spec on those is.

That's what I thought but is it just on the primary side or should there be resistance through the plug wires to?Any body know what ohms.should be?

For the high-tension coil, the primary resistance should be around .3 ohms +- 20%, while the secondary resistance should be around 6300 ohms +- 15%. Primary resistance is measure between the two primary leads, secondary resistance is measure between the two plug wire ends.

Don't make the mistake that many do: secondary resistance is NOT the resistance of the plug wire alone. It must include the high tension coil as well.
