Check for a single loose wire coming out of the stator. These engines "kill" by grounding. If that wire is open (disconnected) near the engine there is no way for it to ground. Every switch in the system which can kill the engine is designed to close that line but it can't if it is open closer to the motor.

If I am not mistaken, the 96 model year had a "closed" ignition system, so it would need ground to run. I would check for a wet condition (coolant?) at the main four prong plug. try drying it out and cleaning it up to see if it helps.
