Hello everyone.

Yamaha Vk540 II (1994) is it normal to be hard on gas. Getting very poor gas mileage. Most of time just driving around in slow motion. New belt installed, however the engine is very responsive and very strong.

Any comments?

My TL433 never did any better than 1 Imperial
gallon per hour ...about 1 US gal in 45 min....Compare
it to sitting in traffic during rush hour and the open road,
When I pull my small groomer it probably drops to 2 gal
per hour ...maybe 4 mpg....
I,m in the market for a VK ...if you are selling....but
I,m in Toronto area ...
Have a good summer...

On my 2022 VK540 I needed about 1/2 throttle to go 60 km/hr. then I slackened the track 2 turns on the back adjusters (experts say all manufacturers set them up way too tight), reduced the amount of drive belt deflection (manufactures set them up too loose), replaced the primary clutch spring with the optional weaker one, and reduced the clock angle preload on the secondary clutch. The result is at 60km/hr I have 3/8" gap in the throttle (of which 1/8" of that is throttle override play), at 1/2" throttle gap it's going 80km/hr and I've gained 12 km/hr on my top end. If I want to pull anything I'll put in low gear.

I should add that it's a bit early but with this setup, from a full tank so far I put 50km on it and are still over the full mark on the guage

I own a 1994 Vk540, i got it new in 1994. It is hard on gas as hell...
I’m guessing that they figure most VK owners will be pulling a small town with it and set it up very geared down for power. Are you familiar with the changes I did? If not I can go into detail. Because compared to how it was out of the box, it’s like I used to be pulling something heavy…up hill for all the revving it was doing and amount of throttle squeeze that was required. Now it seems like it’s down hill with tail wind
