2000 Venture 500 - SMOKER

We have a 2000 Yamaha Venture 500 with only 2800 miles on it. It runs great, but burns oil like crazy. It's such a bad smoker that almost no one will ride behind me. A mechanic checked it out and said everything appears to be OK, but admitted he isn't an expert when it comes to this issue. My wife has a 2000 Yamaha Venture XL (fan cooled 485) and hers burns 1/3 of the oil mine does. Any ideas?

If the pump is adjusted right, you can't do much unless you feel comfortable leaning it out by trial and error.
Does it idle and run good otherwise?

Try amsoil it hardly smokes at all.

Thanks for the response. Yes, it runs and idles just fine. I thought about asking the mechanic to adjust the pump but he wasn't comfortable with his knowledge of the settings. He too suggested a trial and error but we both felt uncomfortable with that idea. I'll try the Amsoil for starters.
